Through my art I examine and deconstruct the world we inhabit. My inspiration comes from the nature of the urban existence. Within this environment is an innate sense of order and randomness, of clutter and balance, of history and change. I am fascinated with the idea of chaos and the imprecise sense of harmony and order. In my work, I often return to the highly symmetrical grid shape. It suggests the symmetry of city plans and the buildings that fill them. It brings to mind the sea of windows of the urban landscape. It can even denote the public areas where people gather. The square shape underscores the potential duality in everything and encourages balance. It symbolizes a prolonged state of presence, a dependable and grounded structure.
My woven fiber and encaustic 3D vessels and sculpture reinterpret the 2D geometry of the square I so often employ. Vessels have existed throughout history, performing many of the most basic and necessary tasks. Their enduring place in our world is both fascinating and significant. The many styles and techniques of basket weaving have evolved throughout the years. The traditional technique I employ pays homage to the rich history of basket weaving yet goes beyond its traditional beginnings, focusing on developing new forms for expression as well as exploring the infinite sculptural possibilities.
